Roadmap – A Look At Our Current Development Plan

The past few months have been very busy for our Read The Kanji development team.  We recently installed our new subscription service which has allowed us the ability to fund some new developments for the site that we hope to roll out very soon.

Every time we decide to add on or modify RtK, we often draw from the ideas on our UserVoice forum, as well as ideas from Facebook, Twitter (@readthekanji), and email (support@readthekanji.com).  While we can’t feasibly choose all of the ideas (too many features would make for a very cluttered experience!), we’d like to discuss a roadmap of what’s coming soon with RtK:

  • We have begun work on revamping our example sentences to move away from our original, often mistake riddled EDICT dictionary sentences, to completely original, natural sentences, uniquely created by two Japanese native speakers.  Hopefully, this will drastically improve the quality of our sentences, eliminating any doubt whether a sentence is correct or not.  We will of course still accept word reports on possible mistakes and typos, but now all potential mistakes can be double checked with our Japanese team to ensure accuracy.
  • Our development team is moving on a brand new interface that promises to be much more intuitive, and incorporate many of the features requested on our UserVoice forum.
  • We hope to couple our new interface with more information about kanji for absolute beginners.
  • We are preparing new study decks for people looking to study things outside of the JLPT.
  • After the new interface has been bug tested, and in play (and hopefully a success among users), we plan to move Read The Kanji towards other platforms, and we’re looking specifically at the highly requested mobile (iPhone?) and offline versions.
  • We will continue to work on providing regular, educational kanji and japanese-related posts on our blog to complement RtK.

As always, we’ll be working on known bugs and performance issues along the way to ensure you get the best experience possible.  And also, please continue to let us know what you think of Read The Kanji, your feedback really helps guide us the right way!

    New development is always good! I personally look forward to being able to expand my knowledge beyond JLPT (not that I know all of that yet). Thank you for keeping us informed.

    Awesome!
    Nice to hear something again.

    I’d definitely download an iPhone app. Are there any plans to adjust for the changes (5 levels now) in the JLPT? I heard they weren’t going to publish kanji lists for the new tests. Either way, I’m a big fan of this site, and I’m definitely interested in seeing the changes you make.

    We are working on grouping the kanji based on new levels of the JLPT. It is a bit more difficult since the Japan Foundation is not providing any materials to facilitate this. But we do have a plan to incorporate the new levels into the site.

    I love this site. It’s easy to use and easy to look at.

    I do hope you get an iPhone version … maybe even an iPad version?

    @Kelly

    We are close to finishing some infrastructure improvements that will make it easier for us to develop for different platforms. It is definitely high on our list to develop a mobile application.

    Great news – can’t wait!
