Version 0.6.1 released, bug fixes and a small request from us

Howdy!  We’re releasing a point release to address some small bug fixes and a couple of small features before we start the heavy work on 0.7 (which we have a small request from some users but we’ll get to that in a minute).  Here’s what’s new:

  • ‘report inaccuracies’ link is added back in to help fix database problems.  It will report the last word done, along with all the information and a comment box to explain what the problem is.  We will look and research all reports, so please feel free to submit one for any strange words, sentences, translations, or inappropriate kanji for the level while taking the quiz.
  • The requested quick hint feature is back as a ‘show all once’ link is added in the right hand side under “hidden elements.”  This will display all the information for a certain word for just that question, without changing any of your user preferences.
  • Fixed strange memory leak on the server side that has been bugging me for the past 2 version releases!
  • Success ratio has been adjusted a bit, numbers were sometimes off due to an older formula that hadn’t been updated.
  • The words in the database were in such a way that they could not be reorganized easily, but this has been fixed so now they can be arranged in any order, new words can be added easily, etc.

And just to keep everyone informed, here are the main features we’re focusing on for in the 0.7 release:

  • Database accuracy improved as much as possible
  • Add an option so a user can display a word in it’s level appropriate kanji, or in it’s full dictionary form.  So for example, on a 4kyuu level word, you could choose to show ひるごはん as either “昼ごはん” (no kanji above level 4) or as “昼御飯” (full kanji, for an extra challenge).  We’re hoping this will help match the kanji in words to their respective jlpt levels without hindering those who like to study extra.
  • Skip a card feature to temporarily skip a card
  • Ability to mix decks!
  • Forgot password and reset function
  • Color code kanji in question to match it’s strength, instead of it just being red all the time.  Or if that doesn’t work out, some sort of indicator as to the strength of the word / kanji you’re on, so you’ll be able to actively see it go up and down.

As for the previously mentioned request, we’d just like formally ask users to really make use of the report inaccuracies button to help pave the way for a stronger, more accurate database for version 0.7.  Up to 0.6, it was somewhat excusable as we were still building the program, but as readthekanji matures, it’s becoming a big weakness we should address.  Any help from fellow kanji fans is definitely appreciated!
